Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has sounded a critical alarm regarding a dramatic surge in fibre optic cable cuts across the nation, with over 8,000 incidents reported annually. This escalating problem is imposing significant financial and operational burdens on telecom operators, diverting essential funds from network expansion and service enhancement initiatives, as revealed by the Chamber’s CEO, Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah, during the organization’s 15th-anniversary soft launch.
Escalating Problem Drains Operator Resources
The frequency of fibre cuts has surged dramatically from approximately 400 incidents per year in the early stages of network deployment to the current staggering figure of over 8,000. This sharp increase poses a substantial threat to network stability and service reliability for Ghanaians.
Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah explained that the rapid expansion of telecommunications infrastructure, while instrumental in boosting internet penetration from around four percent to over 70 percent, has inadvertently increased the exposure of vital fibre optic cables.
