Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has declared that the club possesses the capability and the necessary mentality to challenge for the Premier League title next season. This ambitious assertion comes as the team is on the cusp of securing Champions League football, a significant step forward after a challenging period. Mount, who joined the club with considerable expectations, believes the squad can overcome the 13-year drought since their last league championship.
Mount’s Title Aspirations
Speaking after Manchester United’s recent victory over Brentford, which edges them closer to Champions League qualification, Mount shared his personal and team goals. Having already won the Champions League, his next major target is the Premier League crown. He acknowledged that the goal might seem distant but stressed the importance of adopting a winning mindset.
“Can we do that? Yes, I think we can,” Mount stated. “It may seem a little bit far away, but you must have that mentality to really push yourself as a group.” He pointed to the team’s performances against top rivals like Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal as evidence of their potential.
The midfielder emphasized the need for consistency, particularly on the larger stage of the Champions League and throughout the Premier League campaign. “Now it’s about doing it on a bigger stage in the Champions League and doing it more consistently in the Premier League,” he added. Mount is eager to play a pivotal role in the club’s resurgence.
Navigating Challenges and Future Role
Mount’s first season at Old Trafford has been marked by challenges, including injuries that have limited his appearances. He has featured in 20 Premier League games, starting 10, but has not started since late December. His optimal position within the team’s tactical setup has also been a subject of discussion.
Despite these hurdles, Mount remains confident in his ability to contribute significantly. “I will always back myself,” he asserted. “I know what I’m about and what I can bring.” He expressed his enjoyment of being part of a major club and sees his role in returning Manchester United to the pinnacle of English football as a special mission.
The FA Cup victory provided a taste of silverware, but Mount anticipates that winning the Premier League would be an unparalleled achievement. “To do a Premier League? I can’t even imagine how special that would be,” he shared.

Mount also offered strong support for the current interim management team, particularly Michael Carrick, whom he admired as a player. He described Carrick as “brilliant for me” and highlighted the manager’s calm, level-headed, and knowledgeable approach to the game. Mount noted that Carrick’s clear communication and tactical insight have been instrumental since his arrival.
“He’s very level-headed. Very calm, very knowledgeable about the game,” Mount said of Carrick. “He knows what he wants going into games. He will analyse the opposition and talk us through it on the pitch.” The midfielder believes the team is in a “really good place” under Carrick’s guidance, citing recent strong performances, especially in challenging fixtures.
He also lauded assistant manager Steve Holland, with whom he has prior experience from Chelsea and the England national team. Mount described Holland as having a “football brain” and being unafraid to offer direct tactical advice. He recalled Holland’s confidence-instilling team talks from the outset of the interim management’s tenure.
“He’s got such a football brain,” Mount remarked about Holland. “If he sees something, he’ll know what to say, and he’s not afraid to say it.” Mount views Holland as a tactically astute figure who provides valuable input to the head coach, contributing to the team’s clarity and direction.
