The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) is demanding an urgent resolution to the ongoing leadership and administrative dispute at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s Central Medical Laboratory. The union insists on the immediate reinstatement of the former head of laboratory services and calls for disciplinary action against another doctor, citing concerns over laboratory governance and patient care. This comes as a stakeholder review meeting, initially scheduled to address the matter, has been postponed.
Context of the Dispute
The conflict centers on the leadership structure and administrative hierarchy within the Central Medical Laboratory. MELPWU has expressed deep concern over prolonged uncertainty, which they believe directly impacts patient care, professional governance, staff morale, and the overall quality of laboratory services at Ghana’s premier referral facility.
A key point of contention is the revocation of Dr. Michael Amo Omari’s appointment as Head of Laboratory Services at the Sub-BMC. MELPWU considers his reinstatement a non-negotiable demand.
Furthermore, the union is calling for disciplinary measures against Dr. Asare Offei for what MELPWU describes as reckless and disparaging comments made about test results from the central laboratory. This highlights a perceived lack of respect for the integrity of laboratory diagnostics.
Union’s Demands and Rejections
MELPWU’s demands are presented as unequivocal. Beyond reinstating Dr. Omari, the union insists on the immediate reversal of all unapproved and irregular alterations to the laboratory’s established leadership structure, organogram, and reporting lines.
The union has also strongly rejected the continuation of the interim leadership arrangement. MELPWU states that the mandate for this interim leadership expired on May 12, 2026.
According to the union, extending this interim arrangement beyond its mandate is illegitimate and poses a serious threat to several critical aspects of the laboratory’s operations.
These threats include compromising accreditation standards, undermining professional governance and technical supervision, jeopardizing quality management systems, negatively impacting staff morale, reducing operational efficiency, and destabilizing the institution.
Clarifications and Appeals
MELPWU has been keen to emphasize that the dispute is professional and administrative, not personal or political. Their concerns, they state, are focused on ensuring respect for due process, institutional fairness, and the protection of professional integrity.
The union also moved to dismiss reports suggesting tensions between laboratory scientists and physicians. MELPWU clarified that medical laboratory scientists have not denied physicians access to the laboratory, nor have they engaged in any acts of intimidation or obstruction.
While acknowledging the intervention of the National Labour Commission and the Ministry of Health, MELPWU urged all parties involved to refrain from public commentary that could misrepresent facts or escalate the situation.
Looking Ahead
The postponement of the stakeholder review meeting to allow a Technical Review Committee to finalize its report by May 18, 2026, indicates a move towards a formal evaluation. MELPWU has proposed May 19, 2026, for the subsequent stakeholder meeting, signaling their readiness to engage once the foundational report is complete.
The union assures its members and the public that it will continue to pursue the matter through lawful and institutional channels. The focus remains on safeguarding the dignity, professional autonomy, and the future of medical laboratory services in Ghana.
What remains to be seen is whether the Technical Review Committee’s report will provide a clear path forward and if all parties can adhere to the proposed timeline for resolution, thereby restoring stability and ensuring uninterrupted, high-quality laboratory services at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
