The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced planned maintenance in the Tema Region for Sunday, May 17, 2026, between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, impacting several communities. This scheduled work occurs as ECG engineers simultaneously address an underground cable fault that caused an outage in the Western Region on Saturday, May 16, 2026.
Scheduled Maintenance in Tema Region
The ECG’s planned maintenance in the Tema Region will affect two distinct but overlapping groups of communities. The five-hour outage is set to commence at 10:00 am and conclude at 3:00 pm on Sunday.
Affected areas include Teye Kwame, Asutsuare Junction and Township, Suncity, Manyajokpanya, Glamour Farms, Legacy Girls, Akuse, Volivo, Golden Exotics, Shine Field, Osuwem, Stone Lodge, and the Commandos Military Training Camp. Additionally, Twin Quarries, Derby Quarries, Inzag, and Bright Cement, along with surrounding vicinities, will experience power interruptions.
A separate advisory from ECG confirmed the scope of the maintenance, reiterating the affected areas and the addition of Derby Quarries to the list, consistent with the initial announcement.
Unforeseen Cable Fault in Western Region
These scheduled interventions come amidst ongoing efforts to resolve an unexpected underground cable fault that occurred at Apowa in the Western Region on Saturday, May 16, 2026. The fault disrupted power supply to Apowa township, Adwoa, TUC Estate, Kejebil, and nearby areas.
ECG engineers were promptly deployed to the site to diagnose and rectify the fault. Efforts to restore normal power supply to the affected communities in the Western Region are underway.
ECG’s Response and Apology
In public notices, the ECG extended apologies to all customers affected by both the planned maintenance and the unplanned cable fault. The company acknowledged the inconvenience these disruptions may cause.
ECG reassured the public that its engineering teams are working diligently to address all network issues. The company emphasized that the planned maintenance exercises are crucial for ensuring the long-term reliability and robustness of the power network across the affected regions.
Ensuring Network Stability
The dual occurrences highlight the continuous challenges in maintaining a stable power supply. Planned maintenance is a proactive measure designed to prevent larger, more disruptive failures by upgrading or repairing critical infrastructure.
However, unexpected faults, like the one in Apowa, underscore the inherent complexities and potential vulnerabilities within the electricity distribution network. These events require immediate attention and resource allocation from ECG’s technical teams.
Looking Ahead
Customers in the affected Tema Region areas are advised to prepare for the temporary power outage on Sunday. The ECG’s commitment to network maintenance suggests a focus on improving service reliability, though the simultaneous occurrence of planned and unplanned outages points to ongoing network challenges. The public will be watching for the swift resolution of the Western Region fault and the successful completion of the Tema maintenance, with an expectation of improved service stability in the future.
