Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams has refuted claims of inadequate food provisions for athletes during the recent African Athletics Championship, asserting that the quality and quantity of meals were satisfactory. The minister addressed the allegations on May 18, suggesting that the complaints originated from a single athlete whose account of the situation was inconsistent, as reported by JoyNews’ James Avedzi.
Addressing the Allegations
Minister Adams highlighted the changing nature of the complainant athlete’s statements. Initially, the athlete reportedly claimed to have received only half an egg, which later evolved to one egg, then one piece of chicken, and subsequently two pieces of chicken. These shifting narratives, according to the minister, cast doubt on the credibility of the overall accusation.
Further scrutiny came from the athlete’s claim of consuming nine eggs daily during training in South Africa. Minister Adams pointed out that no prior requests for special dietary needs had been lodged with the organizers. He explained that a specific form exists for athletes with unique dietary requirements, which was not utilized in this instance.
