Lands Ministry Probes Alleged National Security Link to Galamsey

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has launched a fact-finding investigation into allegations that National Security operatives are involved in illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, in Ghana. The probe follows the recent arrest of four armed individuals engaged in galamsey along the River Ankobra.

Context of the Investigation

The investigation was initiated after the arrest of four men on Wednesday, May 20, during an operation by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at Dominase. The suspects were apprehended for illegal mining, unlawful possession of firearms, and environmental destruction along the Ankobra River.

During interrogation, the arrested individuals reportedly claimed they were operating under the direction of individuals identified as “Ras,” “Mambo,” and “Nana Teku.” These individuals are alleged to be National Security operatives based in the Prestea area.

Allegations of Complicity

Paa Kwesi Schandorf, spokesperson for the Lands Ministry, stated that the investigation is crucial due to growing concerns that operations of NAIMOS are being undermined. He indicated that certain individuals purportedly affiliated with National Security appear to be complicit in illegal mining activities in the affected regions.

“It has become very apparent that Galamsey operations in that part of the country seem to have the complicity of certain people who ordinarily should not be involved,” Schandorf said in an interview with TV3’s News Central on Thursday, May 21.

He further explained that feedback from NAIMOS operations consistently points to support for illegal mining from persons allegedly connected to National Security. “Anytime NAIMOS goes on an operation in that particular enclave, that is the feedback we get, that the activities of the men are actually being sponsored by certain persons who are supposed to know better,” he added.

Ministry’s Response

In response to these serious allegations, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has immediately commissioned a fact-finding team. The team’s mandate is to thoroughly investigate the claims and ascertain the identities of those purportedly involved.

“So, basically a fact-finding mission has begun in that respect to unravel their identity and deal with them,” Schandorf confirmed. The ministry emphasized its commitment to uncovering the truth as part of its intensified efforts to combat illegal mining nationwide.

Broader Fight Against Galamsey

The allegations come at a time when the government is intensifying its campaign against illegal mining, which has caused significant environmental degradation and economic losses. The involvement of state security operatives, if proven, would represent a serious challenge to these efforts.

NAIMOS has been instrumental in carrying out operations against illegal miners. The intelligence gathered from the recent arrests, including the names of alleged security operatives, has been handed over to the police to support ongoing investigations.

Implications and Future Outlook

If the allegations are substantiated, they could have significant implications for public trust in security agencies and the government’s anti-galamsey agenda. It highlights the complex and often entrenched nature of illegal mining operations, which may involve powerful individuals and networks.

The public will be watching closely to see the outcome of the fact-finding mission and the actions taken thereafter. The ministry’s swift response indicates a determination to address the issue, but the successful resolution will depend on the thoroughness of the investigation and the accountability of any individuals found to be involved, regardless of their affiliation.

Moving forward, the focus will be on the transparency of the investigation and whether it leads to decisive action against any compromised operatives. The effectiveness of future anti-galamsey operations may hinge on demonstrating that no one is above the law, even those within security apparatus.
