Accra, Ghana – Awentami Paul Afoko, a contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairmanship, urged the party to transition from “guesswork” to a data-informed approach in rebuilding its electoral strength and securing parliamentary seats for the 2028 general elections. Afoko made his appeal while addressing the NPP Minority Caucus in Accra, emphasizing that strategic planning, evidence-based decision-making, and enhanced communication are crucial for the party’s future success.
Shifting from Intuition to Intelligence
Afoko articulated that the party must move beyond relying on intuition and embrace modern electoral strategies. He stressed the importance of understanding the party’s precise standing in every constituency before formulating expansion plans.
“No more guesswork. If we want to win, we must know exactly where we stand, constituency by constituency,” Afoko stated to the MPs.
His proposed strategy prioritizes consolidating the party’s current parliamentary base, which currently stands at 87 Members of Parliament. This involves not only defending existing seats but also actively working to gain new ones and broaden the party’s reach.
“We now have 87 MPs. What we have, we protect,” he asserted. “But protection alone is not enough. We must deliberately find a way to gain more seats and expand our footprint.”
The Role of Research and Communication
The former National Chairman presented his vision as part of a comprehensive political strategy requiring unified support across the party’s structure. He appealed directly to the caucus for their backing in implementing this research-centric plan.
“This is part of the strategy I have, and I am asking for your support to make it a reality,” Afoko implored.
He argued that contemporary elections are increasingly decided by intelligence and a deep understanding of voter behavior, advocating for increased investment in polling, focus groups, and rapid feedback mechanisms. These tools, he believes, will enable the NPP to accurately gauge public sentiment and tailor its message effectively.
“I believe in research-based activities,” Afoko declared. “When you combine that with improved, targeted communication, you give the party the strength to connect with Ghanaians and win their trust.”

Afoko concluded by emphasizing that a united, well-informed, and disciplined NPP is the most viable route for the party to recover lost political ground and return to power with a more robust mandate.
