Former South African Deputy Minister for Transport and ex-Tema East MP, Titus Nii Kwartei Glover, has strongly condemned the South African government’s handling of recent xenophobic attacks, labeling their response as disappointing and insufficient. His remarks came as the initial group of Ghanaians residing in South Africa prepared for repatriation, highlighting ongoing concerns for foreign nationals.
Context of Growing Tensions
The criticism follows a series of violent incidents targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, fueling fears and prompting evacuation efforts. These attacks have reignited discussions about xenophobia and the South African government’s commitment to protecting its diverse population.
Concerns Over Evacuation and Accessibility
Mr. Glover expressed particular concern regarding the ongoing evacuation of Ghanaians. He noted that while efforts are underway, many individuals living outside major urban centers like Pretoria and Johannesburg face significant hurdles in reaching registration points or transportation hubs.
