The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the immediate closure of Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region after violent tribal clashes in the area led to the shooting of three students in just two days—one of whom tragically died.
The closure comes after emergency consultations between education authorities and regional security agencies to assess the rising threat to student safety.
According to reports, on Thursday, June 26, two female day students were shot while on their way to school. The violence escalated on Friday, June 27, when a male student was struck and killed by a stray bullet inside his classroom during mock examinations.
In a memo dated June 27, 2025, the Acting Regional Director of Education confirmed that arrangements are being made to provide police escorts for students as they return home.
“Given the immediate threat to life, we held extensive discussions with school authorities, the District Education Directorate, security officials, and the Regional Minister to determine the safest course of action,” the statement noted.
The GES described the closure as a temporary but necessary measure to protect both students and staff, while confirming that the situation will continue to be monitored closely.
The memo also revealed that the Regional Directorate has requested further guidance and support from the GES Deputy Director-General in navigating the crisis.
