Ghana Bolsters Forest Protection with New Infrastructure to Combat Illegal Activities

Ghana, with crucial support from the United Kingdom, has commissioned ten new forest protection camps and two checkpoint accommodation facilities within the Oda River Forest Reserve. This initiative, launched recently, aims to significantly enhance the nation’s capacity to combat illegal mining, logging, and other threats jeopardizing its vital forest ecosystems.

Strengthening Enforcement and Operational Capacity

The newly commissioned facilities represent a tangible commitment by the Ghanaian government to sustainable forest management and environmental stewardship. Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Joseph Boakye, Director of the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission, emphasized the critical role of these infrastructure improvements.

Boakye highlighted that Ghana’s forests are indispensable national assets, underpinning local livelihoods, preserving biodiversity, and fortifying the nation’s resilience against climate change. The government’s determination to safeguard these resources is now backed by strengthened enforcement measures and enhanced operational capabilities for frontline officers.
