A man has been executed in China for the murder of prominent gaming tycoon Lin Qi, founder of Yoozoo Games. The execution, reportedly carried out on May 21, was confirmed by the company on Tuesday, bringing a close to a case that shocked the global entertainment industry.
The convicted murderer, Xu Yao, was found guilty of poisoning Lin Qi in 2020. The motive stemmed from a professional dispute, with reports indicating Xu felt sidelined by Lin shortly after playing a key role in securing a Netflix deal for the adaptation of the popular Chinese science fiction trilogy, “3 Body Problem.” Xu’s execution was confirmed by Yoozoo Games, which stated, “justice has ultimately been served.”
Context of the “3 Body Problem” Adaptation
Lin Qi’s company, Yoozoo Games, held the film adaptation rights for Liu Cixin’s “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy, commonly known as “3 Body Problem.” This acclaimed Chinese science fiction series has been translated into numerous languages and has inspired multiple adaptations. The Netflix series, released in 2024, quickly became a major hit for the streaming platform, with Lin Qi posthumously credited as an executive producer.
The controversy and subsequent murder trial highlighted the high stakes and complex business dealings within the rapidly expanding entertainment sector, particularly concerning intellectual property rights for globally recognized franchises.
The Murder and Investigation
The fatal incident occurred in December 2020 when Lin Qi fell ill and was hospitalized. He passed away nine days later at the age of 39. At the time of his death, Lin was estimated to have a net worth of approximately 6.8 billion yuan, according to the Hurun China Rich List.
Investigations led to the arrest of Xu Yao days after Lin’s hospitalization. The court later convicted Xu, describing his plot as “extremely despicable.” Xu had reportedly disguised lethal substances as probiotic pills, which he administered to Lin. The poisoning plot also affected several other individuals, causing them to fall ill.
Professional Dispute and Downfall
Lin Qi founded Yoozoo Games, a Shanghai-based developer known for titles such as “Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming.” In 2018, Lin appointed Xu to lead Three-Body Universe, a subsidiary specifically created to manage projects related to the “3 Body Problem” franchise.
However, their professional relationship soured in 2020 when Lin decided to reassign business operations leadership, reportedly sidelining Xu. This perceived betrayal is believed to have been the primary motive for the murder.
Industry Reaction and Judicial Process
Lin Qi’s death sent shockwaves through the Chinese and international gaming and entertainment industries. Yoozoo Games, in its statement confirming the execution, expressed gratitude for the judicial process and mourned the loss of their founder. “As colleagues who fought alongside him, all members of the company are grateful for the impartiality of the judicial process,” the company stated.
One of Xu’s other victims, who also fell ill due to the poisoning plot, reportedly shared on social media, “Justice comes in the end, even if it’s late.” This sentiment reflects the lengthy judicial process and the eventual resolution of the case.
Implications and Future Outlook
The execution of Xu Yao marks the final chapter in a high-profile murder case that intersects the worlds of gaming, science fiction, and international media adaptation. It underscores the severe legal consequences for violent crimes, even within corporate environments.
For the industry, the case serves as a stark reminder of the intense pressures and potential conflicts that can arise from managing high-value intellectual property and large-scale media projects. The successful adaptation of “3 Body Problem” by Netflix, despite the tragedy surrounding its key figures, highlights the enduring appeal of the source material and the global reach of Chinese creative works. Moving forward, stakeholders in major media franchises will likely face increased scrutiny regarding internal governance, dispute resolution mechanisms, and the security surrounding key personnel and business operations.
