A fuel tanker carrying 45,000 litres of petrol overturned near the Anyinam Railway Station in Ghana’s Eastern Region in the early hours of Sunday, May 24, triggering a multi-day emergency operation by multiple state agencies to prevent a fire and safely manage the spill.
The incident occurred around 2:35 a.m. when the tanker, identified by registration number BF-9373-03, veered off the road. It subsequently landed in a muddy ditch while en route from Tema to Burkina Faso.
Emergency Response and Initial Actions
Firefighters from the Anyinam Fire Station were the first on the scene, arriving shortly after the incident was reported. Their immediate priority was to mitigate the risk of a fire outbreak.
Emergency responders commenced operations to assess potential fuel leakage and fire hazards. Cooling operations were performed on the tanker to reduce the risk of ignition.
The driver of the tanker sustained minor injuries and received attention at the scene.
Extended Operations and Salvage Efforts
The recovery and monitoring operation extended for three days, overseen by District Fire Commander DOI Michael George Korda. The primary goal was the safe extraction of the overturned tanker from the ditch.
Officials reported damage to a portion of the tanker, with estimated losses amounting to approximately GH¢70,000. However, a significant quantity of fuel, valued at roughly GH¢400,000, was successfully salvaged during the operation.
Collaborative Investigation and Safety Measures
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Road Safety Authority were also deployed to the site. Their roles included assisting with traffic control and conducting preliminary investigations into the accident.
Authorities have confirmed that a formal investigation is underway to ascertain the precise cause of the tanker’s derailment.
