Ga Mantse Demands Action Against Chiefs Selling Lands on Waterways Amidst Accra Floods

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of traditional leaders allegedly selling lands situated on waterways, wetlands, and other flood-prone zones in Accra. This demand follows recent devastating floods caused by the spillage of the Weija Dam, which displaced numerous residents and submerged properties.

Context of Recurring Flooding

Accra, Ghana’s capital, has long grappled with severe flooding, particularly during the rainy seasons. This recurring crisis is frequently exacerbated by inadequate urban planning, poor waste management, and the persistent encroachment on natural drainage systems. The recent spillage of the Weija Dam, necessary due to rising water levels from heavy rainfall, highlighted the vulnerability of downstream communities.

Ga Mantse’s Tour and Strong Condemnation

During a tour of flood-affected communities such as Tetegu, Oblogo, and Choice on Thursday, May 28, the paramount chief expressed grave concern over the ongoing development in areas critical for natural water flow. King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II directly blamed certain traditional authorities for facilitating these developments, effectively obstructing natural drainage channels and environmentally protected zones.
