Mahama Highlights Growth and Jobs at 2026 May Day Celebration

President John Mahama joined thousands of workers at Jackson Park in Koforidua on Friday, May 1, 2026, to celebrate May Day. The President delivered a keynote address focusing on the government’s economic and labour priorities for the nation.

Economic Reset and Future of Work

The annual celebration, themed “Pivoting to Growth, Jobs, and Sustainable Livelihoods, Resetting Ghana Beyond Macroeconomic Stability,” gathered workers from across Ghana, representatives from Organised Labour, and government officials. The event served as a platform to discuss the current state of Ghana’s economy and to chart a course for the future of work.

President Mahama used the occasion to reiterate his administration’s dedication to fostering inclusive economic growth, expanding job opportunities, and enhancing the livelihoods of citizens. He emphasized that the next phase of economic reforms would concentrate on transforming macroeconomic stability into tangible benefits and opportunities for the populace.

“Our mission is clear. We want to turn stability into opportunity. We will not just manage the economy; we will expand it to create jobs and prosperity,” President Mahama declared to the assembled crowd.

Ensuring Benefits Reach the Grassroots

The President assured workers that the positive outcomes of the economic recovery efforts would be evident at the household level. He specifically mentioned that teachers, technicians, and workers in crucial sectors would be among the first to experience these improvements.

“I wish to promise the Ghanaian worker that as the economy grows, you will be the first to benefit. Growth must filter down to the pocket of the Ghanaian worker,” he stated, underscoring a commitment to shared prosperity.

Governance and Anti-Corruption Efforts

In addition to economic matters, President Mahama addressed governance and accountability. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to intensifying anti-corruption measures, emphasizing the importance of public officials remaining accountable to the citizens they serve.

The President also commended the judiciary for its proactive steps in establishing additional High Courts. This initiative aims to expedite the prosecution of offences related to audit findings, thereby strengthening oversight and accountability mechanisms.

Energy Sector Resilience

Addressing recent concerns in the energy sector, President Mahama provided an update on the Akosombo fire incident. He confirmed that technical teams had successfully restored the power generation capacity at the VRA station.

“Just yesterday, I was in Akosombo to inspect the damage at the VRA station. GRIDCo and VRA engineers have been able to bypass the affected control room and restart all six turbines at the Akosombo Generating Station,” he explained.

He lauded the engineers for their swift and effective response, highlighting their competence and resilience as a testament to the capabilities of Ghanaian workers in driving national development forward.
