Accra, Ghana – May 1, 2026 – The Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana is urging the government to leverage the nation’s recently achieved macroeconomic stability to create jobs and improve living standards for its workers. TUC Chairman Bernard Owusu made this call during the 2026 May Day celebrations in Koforidua, emphasizing that economic progress must translate into tangible benefits for the average Ghanaian.
Economic Stability as a Foundation
Speaking at Jackson Park, Mr. Owusu acknowledged the government’s success in restoring macroeconomic stability, recognizing it as a crucial foundation for national development. He stated that these gains provide an essential platform upon which further progress can be built.
“We acknowledge the effort made to restore macroeconomic stability. These gains are important, and they provide a foundation for progress,” Mr. Owusu remarked. He underscored the fundamental role of workers in the economy, asserting, “For without the Ghanaian worker, there is no economy, and there is no nation.”
The Need for Growth and Job Creation
However, the TUC Chairman stressed that the focus must now shift from mere stability to active growth and the creation of sustainable livelihoods. He called for the next phase of Ghana’s development to prioritize these areas, ensuring that economic gains are widely shared.
Mr. Owusu specifically highlighted the need for improved living conditions for citizens. This, he explained, must be achieved through the provision of decent jobs and the strengthening of social protection systems. He expressed optimism that the current leadership would give urgent attention to inclusive growth.
Critical Sectors Under Scrutiny
The TUC also drew attention to the critical role of key economic sectors, particularly energy and agriculture. Mr. Owusu warned that weaknesses in these areas could significantly undermine national progress and economic resilience.
“When energy fails, industry slows. When industry slows, jobs suffer. And when jobs suffer, families feel the pain,” he cautioned. The TUC’s message serves as a reminder that the health of these foundational industries is directly linked to job security and the overall economic well-being of workers and their families.
Looking Ahead: From Stability to Prosperity
The TUC’s message on May Day signals a clear expectation from Ghana’s workforce: that the hard-won macroeconomic stability should rapidly translate into measurable improvements in daily life. The focus is now on how effectively policymakers can foster job creation and strengthen social safety nets.
The coming months will be crucial in observing how the government addresses the TUC’s concerns regarding the energy and agricultural sectors. Sustained investment and strategic reforms in these areas will be key indicators of Ghana’s commitment to building a resilient economy that benefits all its citizens, ensuring that economic stability paves the way for widespread prosperity and improved living standards.
