Telecel Ghana employees officially commissioned a renovated and equipped 30-seater information and communication technology (ICT) laboratory at the Islamic Basic School in Akim Achiase on [Date of commissioning – implied to be recent]. The commissioning ceremony was attended by key figures including the District Chief Executive, education officials, local leaders, and community members, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the project.
A Dream Come True for Students
The newly established ICT centre is equipped with 30 desktop computers, new furniture, and a year-long internet connection. This facility is expected to significantly enhance ICT education and provide students with practical technological skills. Headteacher Mr Emmanuel Larbi Nyarko expressed immense gratitude, stating the centre fulfills a long-held dream for his students. He emphasized its importance in providing access to digital learning opportunities necessary for global competitiveness and bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, Head of Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications at Telecel Ghana, reiterated the company’s broader commitment to leveraging technology for social inclusion and national development. She stated that the Telecel Foundation believes in creating opportunities and transforming lives through digital education and health initiatives. Rockson stressed that the ICT lab empowers young people in Akim Achiase to lead in the digital future, underscoring the unique, employee-driven nature of this particular project. She also urged the community to maintain the facility for sustained impact.

The District Chief Executive for Akim Achiase, Hon. Samuel Owusu Brako, lauded the employee-funded initiative, affirming that children in rural communities deserve equitable digital opportunities. He likened the IT lab to a ‘tree of knowledge’ that will benefit generations of students. Mr Brako acknowledged the world’s increasing digitalization and the necessity for every child to be connected, not isolated. For students like Hafisatu, a basic seven pupil, the new facility represents a gateway to future aspirations. Previously limited to theoretical ICT lessons, she anticipates the lab will help her learn faster and make lessons easier, potentially aiding her ambition to pursue a career in aviation. The students’ excitement was palpable during the commissioning, with many eagerly exploring the new computers and the internet, demonstrating a renewed interest in digital literacy.
