Eight students have been arrested in connection with a suspected arson attack that killed 16 pupils at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Kenya, early Thursday morning. Police identified the eight as “persons of interest” after reviewing CCTV footage and conducting interviews with students and staff. The fire ripped through the upper floor of a dormitory that housed 135 bunk beds, approximately 120km north-west of the capital, Nairobi.
Investigation Underway
The National Police Service stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the blaze. The arrested students were reportedly traced to their homes and brought back to the school for questioning. They were among 30 students initially recalled by detectives for interviews.

Sorrowful scenes unfolded at the school as parents and relatives arrived seeking information about their loved ones. Security was heightened as crowds gathered, demanding swift action and accountability. Many parents expressed distress over the lack of immediate information.
“I arrived at the school at 07:00 and three hours later I don’t have any information,” Njuki Nthimba, who was searching for his niece, told the BBC. Police organized parents into groups based on whether their children were arrested, had died, or were unaccounted for. “I handed them my niece’s name, and I am now waiting to be told information about her,” he added.
Samuel Githua shared his anguish while looking for his sister. “I don’t know where my sister is, we’ve been told some children are in hospital, some in the mortuary… Our mother died when we were young, so I have taken care of her like a father and mother. She has been my child,” he said.
A Recurring Tragedy in Kenyan Schools
Kenya has a history of deadly school fires. Just two years prior, at least 21 people perished in a dormitory fire in central Kenya. Many such incidents are attributed to arson, with disgruntled pupils reportedly retaliating against disciplinary measures or poor living conditions.
Accidental causes have also been cited in some cases. However, overcrowding in dormitories and the failure to adhere to basic safety guidelines, such as ensuring clear exits and unlocked windows, are frequently blamed for the high casualty rates in these tragedies.
