Ghana Strengthens Ebola Preparedness with New Public Health Directives

Ghana’s Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has mandated the immediate implementation of hand-washing stations at all mass gatherings, a move aimed at bolstering the nation’s defense against a potential Ebola outbreak. This directive follows a comprehensive inspection of key national response facilities, including the Accra International Airport, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, and the Ga East Infectious Disease Centre, underscoring a proactive stance despite no current confirmed cases in the country.

National Readiness Assessment

The Minister’s tour provided an in-depth look at Ghana’s preparedness infrastructure. His assessment began at the Accra International Airport, where he reviewed passenger screening procedures. While generally satisfied, he ordered enhancements to surveillance at entry points.

These improvements include the deployment of advanced temperature scanners and the optimization of passenger flow systems to ensure more effective traveller screening. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was also distributed to frontline health personnel.

A dedicated sample reception center has been established to manage suspected cases safely and efficiently. The World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative, Dr. Fiona Braka, acknowledged Ghana’s strong surveillance and laboratory systems, emphasizing the WHO’s goal of confirming suspected Ebola cases within 24 hours.

Infectious Disease Management

The Ga East Infectious Disease Centre was the Minister’s final inspection point. Officials confirmed the facility’s preparedness to manage potential outbreaks, leveraging past experience with public health emergencies.
