MP Defends Akufo-Addo's Stance on Anti-Gay Bill Amidst Legislative Twists

Accra, Ghana – June 1, 2024 – Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, on Monday defended former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s handling of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, asserting that the former President was unfairly blamed for delays in its passage. Fordjour’s defense came during a Minority press conference, where he highlighted legal proceedings and subsequent amendments as key factors influencing the Bill’s journey, challenging the public narrative that positioned Akufo-Addo as the sole impediment.

Context of the Bill’s Legislative Journey

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, often referred to as the anti-gay bill, has been a contentious piece of legislation in Ghana. Its path through Parliament has been marked by significant debate, public pressure, and legal challenges.

The Bill seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities and related advocacy, sparking strong reactions both domestically and internationally. Proponents argue it upholds Ghanaian cultural values and family structures, while opponents raise concerns about human rights and potential discrimination.

Challenging the Narrative of Delay

Rev. Fordjour specifically addressed claims that former President Akufo-Addo deliberately stalled the Bill. He cited a statement attributed to President John Mahama, who reportedly stated that the Bill, passed by Parliament in 2024, was not submitted to Akufo-Addo for assent due to ongoing court proceedings related to the legislation.
