The Ashanti Regional Directorate of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) successfully registered and renewed the membership of over 1.48 million individuals during its inaugural “King’s Month” campaign in May 2026. This special initiative, launched in honour of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, aimed to significantly increase enrollment and renewals for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) across the region.
Context: Expanding Health Insurance Coverage
The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is a vital social protection intervention in Ghana, designed to provide access to affordable healthcare services for its citizens. Despite its importance, challenges in enrollment and active membership renewal have persisted. The NHIA has been implementing various strategies to broaden its reach and ensure more Ghanaians benefit from the scheme, moving towards the goal of universal health coverage.
Campaign Success and Numbers
During the month-long campaign, the NHIA in the Ashanti Region saw a substantial surge in activity. According to Muniru Muntaka Mohammed, the Ashanti Regional Director of the NHIS, 51,976 new subscribers joined the scheme. Furthermore, a significant 1,432,198 existing members took the opportunity to renew their subscriptions.
Cumulatively, the “King’s Month” exercise recorded a total of 1,484,174 registrations and renewals. This figure represents a significant achievement for the regional directorate and the NHIA as a whole.
Honouring Tradition and Sustaining Awareness
The campaign was specifically designed to coincide with and honour Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene. Mr. Mohammed expressed gratitude to the Manhyia Palace and the dedicated NHIA staff whose efforts were instrumental in achieving the campaign’s success.
He highlighted the outcome as a major milestone in the NHIA’s ongoing efforts to expand health insurance coverage and enhance access to healthcare services within the Ashanti Region. The positive reception and results have led to the adoption of “King’s Month” as an annual program.
Future of the Initiative
The NHIA has officially declared “King’s Month” an annual event, to be observed every May. This tradition aims to recognize the Asantehene’s contributions to national development while serving as a dedicated period to intensify efforts in registering new members and renewing existing ones onto the NHIS.
The authority anticipates that this annual campaign will play a crucial role in maintaining public awareness regarding the importance of health insurance. It is expected to encourage more residents to enroll and ensure their membership remains active, thereby strengthening the scheme’s sustainability.
Broader Implications for Universal Health Coverage
This successful campaign in the Ashanti Region is part of the NHIA’s broader national agenda to achieve universal health coverage. By increasing active membership and ensuring continuous renewal, the NHIA aims to create a more robust and accessible healthcare system for all Ghanaians.
The strategy of linking enrollment drives to significant cultural figures or events appears to be an effective method for engagement. This approach could potentially be replicated in other regions to boost NHIS coverage nationwide. The focus remains on expanding access to affordable healthcare services and increasing the number of active members across the country.
Looking Ahead
The success of the “King’s Month” campaign sets a precedent for future NHIS outreach programs. Stakeholders will be watching to see how this annual initiative impacts enrollment figures in subsequent years and whether similar culturally-attuned campaigns can be successfully implemented in other regions to accelerate progress towards universal health coverage in Ghana.
