Accra, Ghana – Energy Minister John Jinapor has reassured Ghanaians that the nation’s energy supply is currently stable, addressing recent public concerns about power reliability. The Minister made these remarks during the President’s “Reset Tour” in the Eastern Region, highlighting ongoing efforts to bolster the power infrastructure following challenges, including a fire incident at the Akosombo dam.
Commendation for VRA and GRIDCo Staff
Minister Jinapor expressed gratitude to the dedicated staff of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo). He specifically commended their diligent work in maintaining and restoring electricity supply across the country.
“On behalf of the President and people of Ghana, let me say a big thank you to the staff of VRA and GRIDCo for the job you have done. You deserve commendation,” stated Minister Jinapor.
Nationwide Transformer Installation Underway
The government is actively working to strengthen the nation’s power distribution network. A key initiative involves the installation of over 2,500 new transformers nationwide.
Minister Jinapor emphasized that these are not inherited assets but new procurement. “We are installing over 2,500 transformers. These are not inherited transformers. They are new ones procured under the leadership of His Excellency President Mahama and Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson to fix the electricity system,” he explained.
This initiative aims to enhance the reliability of power supply and reduce the frequency of outages experienced by citizens and businesses. The Minister dismissed any suggestions that the transformer rollout was part of previous infrastructure, asserting its role in current improvement efforts.
Commitment to Sector Sustainability and Expansion
The government remains committed to sustaining the recent improvements within the energy sector. Plans are also in motion to expand capacity to meet the growing energy demands of the populace and industries.
“Let me assure the people of Ghana that your energy situation is stable,” Minister Jinapor reiterated. He expressed the government’s confidence in the ongoing reforms and their positive impact on the power sector’s trajectory.
Future Outlook
The focus on infrastructure upgrades and the assurance of stability signal a proactive approach to managing Ghana’s energy needs. Continued investment in the power distribution network and capacity expansion will be crucial in supporting economic growth and ensuring consistent energy access for all Ghanaians. Observers will be watching the progress of the transformer installations and the broader impact of these reforms on national energy security.
