The Ministry of Health (MoH) has unequivocally condemned the alleged assault of a senior staff midwife by a patient’s relative on June 2, 2026, at the Community 22 Polyclinic in Ashaiman. This incident, described as unacceptable and a threat to healthcare professionals nationwide, has prompted a high-level government response and renewed calls for enhanced safety measures within health facilities.
Ministry’s Immediate Response and Solidarity
Following public outcry, a six-member delegation, acting on the directive of Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, visited the assaulted midwife. The delegation’s purpose was to express the minister’s deep concern and assure the victim of the ministry’s unwavering support during the ongoing investigation.
The visiting team included prominent figures from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Ministry of Health. They held discussions with the victim and the polyclinic’s management, reiterating the government’s commitment to protecting healthcare professionals from violence, intimidation, and abuse.
The ministry emphasized that every effort would be made to provide necessary support to the midwife as the investigation progresses.
Condemnation of Violence Against Healthcare Workers
In a strongly worded statement, the Ministry of Health condemned all forms of violence against healthcare workers. It stressed that health professionals are entitled to work in environments free from threats, harassment, and physical attacks.
The ministry underscored that healthcare facilities are intended to be spaces of healing and compassion, not sites of violence. Such attacks are deemed unacceptable under any circumstances.
Furthermore, the MoH warned that violence against health workers not only endangers individuals but also severely compromises the delivery of essential healthcare services to communities.
Growing Concerns for Frontline Staff
The assault has amplified existing concerns within the health sector regarding the increasing vulnerability of frontline healthcare workers, particularly nurses and midwives. These professionals frequently serve as the initial point of contact for patients and their families.
Repeated reports of verbal abuse, threats, and physical attacks by patients or their relatives, especially in demanding settings like emergency rooms, maternity wards, and outpatient departments, have been a persistent issue.
This latest incident has intensified demands for more robust security measures at health facilities and stricter enforcement of protective laws for healthcare workers.
Commitment to Security and Support
The Ministry of Health reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding healthcare workers and enhancing security protocols across all health facilities nationwide. The goal is to ensure the uninterrupted provision of quality healthcare services.
The ministry expressed solidarity with the assaulted midwife and the staff of Community 22 Polyclinic, as well as all health workers facing challenging conditions across the country.
Highlighting the vital role of healthcare professionals, the MoH called upon the public to show respect and provide support to these dedicated individuals in their crucial duties.
The investigation into the specific incident at Community 22 Polyclinic is ongoing.
Looking Ahead: What to Watch Next
The Ministry of Health’s firm response signals a potential shift towards more proactive measures to protect healthcare workers. Stakeholders will be watching closely to see if increased security presence, improved incident reporting mechanisms, and stricter legal repercussions for perpetrators are implemented. Public awareness campaigns aimed at fostering respect for healthcare professionals are also anticipated. The effectiveness of these measures in preventing future incidents will be a key indicator of progress in ensuring a safer working environment for Ghana’s frontline health providers.
