False Emergency Calls Hamper Flood Relief Efforts in Greater Accra

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) has expressed grave concern over an escalating number of false and prank emergency calls received by response agencies amidst ongoing flooding in the region. These misleading reports are diverting essential resources and personnel away from genuine life-threatening situations, officials stated this week.

Escalating Problem During Crisis

Institutions including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the National Ambulance Service are reportedly inundated with fabricated distress calls. The GARCC, along with the Office of the Greater Accra Regional Minister, has identified this trend as a significant impediment to effective flood response operations.

A statement released by the GARCC highlighted that emergency responders are working tirelessly to rescue stranded individuals, provide aid to affected communities, and address urgent distress calls. The misuse of emergency communication channels, however, places an undue burden on these dedicated personnel and diminishes the impact of ongoing relief efforts.

Impact on Resources and Operations

The diversion of resources is a critical concern. When emergency services are dispatched to respond to false alarms, it means fewer resources are available for actual emergencies. This can lead to delayed response times for those genuinely in need of assistance, potentially resulting in greater loss of life and property.
