Ghanaian physician Dr. Joyce Emefa Addo-Klah was honored with the prestigious Africa’s 100 Legendary Award in Kigali, Rwanda, over the weekend. The award recognizes her significant contributions to preventative health and her leadership in public health restructuring across sub-Saharan Africa, two years after her heroic mid-air rescue.

The recognition in Kigali echoes Dr. Addo-Klah’s courageous actions aboard a KLM flight from Amsterdam to Accra exactly twenty-four months prior. During the flight, a passenger collapsed, prompting an emergency call.
Dr. Addo-Klah stepped forward, transforming the aircraft’s aisle into an emergency medical unit. Under immense pressure, she administered critical life-saving interventions and stabilized the passenger until the flight safely landed at Kotoka International Airport.

The celebratory event gathered distinguished pan-African leaders and honorees from various countries, including Egypt, Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
