Health Ministry Urges End to KATH Strike Amid CEO Investigation

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has appealed to doctors and nurses at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to resume their duties following a strike action that began after the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The appeal, issued on June 7, comes as an internal investigation into the CEO’s conduct and the circumstances surrounding the closure of the Accident and Emergency Unit is underway.

Strike Action Escalates Following CEO Suspension

The Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA) initiated the strike shortly after the CEO’s suspension. Their action was later joined by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), who are advocating for the CEO’s reinstatement.

The Ministry of Health deemed the strike “unfortunate,” warning of significant disruptions to healthcare services at the vital referral hospital. In their statement, the MOH emphasized their dual commitment to patient welfare and a safe working environment for healthcare professionals.

“The Ministry of Health remains committed to protecting the interests of patients while ensuring a safe and conducive working environment for all health workers. We therefore urge all affected staff to reconsider their decision and return to work in the interest of patients and the general population,” the statement read.

Investigation into Unit Closure

The MOH clarified that the CEO’s suspension is an administrative measure designed to facilitate an impartial inquiry. The investigation centers on the events leading to the closure of the Accident and Emergency Unit.

A key point of contention appears to be the decision to suspend admissions to the unit, which the Ministry stated was inconsistent with national emergency healthcare policies. These policies mandate that no patient seeking emergency care should be denied treatment.

The Ministry stressed that the suspension is not disciplinary. The CEO, a medical officer, will continue to hold that position pending the outcome of the investigation.

Addressing Grievances and Maintaining Services

While acknowledging the concerns raised by hospital staff, the Ministry views industrial action as an inappropriate method for resolving administrative issues. They urged health workers to utilize established grievance procedures.

The Ministry also stressed the importance of maintaining essential services during this period. The Ghana Health Service has been tasked with ensuring the continuity of emergency healthcare delivery at KATH.

The Ministry assured the public that measures are being implemented to address the challenges at KATH. This includes protecting patients and supporting healthcare workers. Stakeholders are being called upon to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.

Future Outlook

The resolution of this strike hinges on the Ministry’s ability to conduct a swift and transparent investigation while reassuring staff about their concerns. The coming days will be critical in determining if normal operations can resume at KATH and how effectively internal disputes within major health facilities can be managed moving forward.
