Midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s friendly match against Ukraine in Odense on Sunday, prompting the game’s abandonment. The Danish Football Association confirmed that Eriksen is now conscious and in stable condition.
Incident During Match
The match was stopped in the 65th minute when Eriksen, 34, fell to the ground. Medical personnel quickly attended to him on the field.
Denmark’s national team doctor, Morten Boesen, stated that Eriksen was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness rapidly. “As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should,” Boesen explained, referring to an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) fitted to Eriksen.
Eriksen was able to walk off the pitch by himself and was subsequently taken to the hospital for further examinations to determine the cause of the incident.
Medical History and Career
This event echoes a similar cardiac arrest Eriksen suffered during a Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021. Following that incident, he received an ICD, a type of pacemaker, which allowed him to resume his professional football career.
He returned to playing with Brentford in 2022, eight months after his initial collapse. He then moved to Manchester United and most recently played for Wolfsburg, completing 34 games in the 2025-26 season. Sunday’s match marked his 151st international appearance for Denmark.
Response from Teammates and Staff
Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg described the shock of witnessing the event. “Everyone reacted super-fast and with respect,” Hojbjerg commented to Danish broadcaster TV2. “I can only compliment how much courage those who took care of Christian on the field had.”
Echoing the sentiment, Denmark coach Brian Riemer emphasized the team’s solidarity. “The most important thing is that Christian is doing well and he is,” Riemer stated after the game was called off. “He has left the field, and he has sent his regards to the players.”
Players from both Denmark and Ukraine formed protective rings around Eriksen while he received medical attention, a gesture of support also seen during his 2021 collapse. The game was officially abandoned shortly after he was taken to the ambulance.
Broader Implications
The incident raises renewed discussions about player cardiac health and the effectiveness of medical interventions in professional sports. The presence and functionality of Eriksen’s ICD appear to have played a crucial role in his recovery this time.
For fans, the event serves as a stark reminder of the physical risks involved in elite sports and the importance of rapid medical response. The solidarity shown by both teams highlights the strong sense of community within the football world.
Looking Ahead
As Eriksen undergoes further medical evaluation, the football community will be watching closely for updates on his condition and the findings regarding the cause of his collapse. This event may prompt further reviews of cardiac screening protocols and emergency procedures in football leagues worldwide.
