Professor Kwame Karikari, former Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), has sharply criticized African media outlets for their inadequate reporting on continental and geopolitical issues. Speaking at a workshop in Accra, he highlighted a pervasive reliance on international news sources for regional coverage, which he argues undermines Africa’s ability to shape its own narrative. The event, organized by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) and the West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS), focused on enhancing media capacity regarding foreign influence, geopolitics, and democracy resilience in West Africa and the Sahel.
A Continent’s Narrative Gap
Karikari pointed out that most African media organizations maintain an overly localized focus, often turning to global giants like CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeera for news concerning their own continent. This dependence, he stated, is detrimental to Africa’s self-representation on the world stage.
