The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Monday in Accra vehemently accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of propagating falsehoods regarding procurement processes at GoldBod. The NDC asserts these claims, which allege improper procedures and sole-sourcing orchestrated by a senior government official, are designed to erode public trust in state institutions and discredit the party’s National Communications Officer and CEO of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi.
Context of the Accusations
The controversy centers on allegations that GoldBod’s procurement activities bypassed due process and involved sole-sourcing, with specific accusations directed at Sammy Gyamfi. These claims have surfaced amidst growing public scrutiny of government procurement transparency and the management of Ghana’s gold resources.
NDC’s Rebuttal and Strategy
The NDC has strongly refuted these allegations, labeling them as misleading and politically motivated. Speaking at the relaunch of the party’s “Setting the Records Straight” platform, Deputy National Communications Officer, Ako Gunn, stated that the NPP has resorted to propaganda due to an inability to engage on policy matters.
“First, it was misinformation around GoldBod, its procurement, and others,” Gunn remarked, characterizing the NPP’s approach as a consistent shift from one “false narrative to another.” He insisted that the claims of sole sourcing and procedural bypasses are baseless and part of a deliberate strategy to foster public suspicion around government operations.
The “Setting the Records Straight” initiative, according to the NDC, is designed to counter such narratives by providing timely responses and preventing the distortion of facts in the public domain. The platform aims to offer immediate refutations to allegations that the NDC deems politically motivated smear campaigns.
Political Tensions and Public Trust
GoldBod has become a focal point in the ongoing political discourse, particularly concerning transparency in its operations and the broader management of Ghana’s valuable gold assets. The NDC contends that the NPP’s communication strategy specifically targets key government officials and institutions to undermine public confidence.
The NDC’s response indicates a heightened level of political engagement, where countering opposition narratives through a dedicated platform is seen as crucial for maintaining public perception and defending the integrity of government functions. This approach signals a proactive stance against what the party describes as a coordinated effort to destabilize trust.
Looking Ahead
The relaunch of the “Setting the Records Straight” platform suggests the NDC is preparing for sustained engagement on these and other issues. Observers will be watching to see how effectively the NDC can counter the NPP’s narrative and whether the public discourse around GoldBod’s procurement processes will shift towards a more evidence-based discussion. The effectiveness of such platforms in shaping public opinion and the potential for further escalation of these political exchanges will be key developments to monitor.
