The Rent Control Department has initiated a nationwide clampdown on unlawful hostel fee increases, aiming to ensure fairness for students and ease financial burdens on families, rather than deterring private investment in student accommodation. The initiative, which began on Wednesday, May 6, involves unannounced inspections and is set to continue until the end of the year.
Addressing Student Accommodation Costs
Acting Rent Commissioner Fredrick Opoku stated that the ongoing exercise is part of broader governmental efforts to tackle the escalating costs of student housing. This intervention seeks to alleviate the significant financial strain experienced by students and their parents across the country.
Mr. Opoku emphasized that the department’s approach is methodical and consultative, prioritizing engagement and proper assessment over arbitrary enforcement. The goal is to ensure that pricing structures within the student accommodation sector comply with existing regulations while maintaining equitable conditions for both hostel owners and student renters.
