The Ghana Education Service (GES) has firmly refuted claims that students enrolled in the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy are being charged feeding fees, stating unequivocally that no educational institution has received authorization to collect any money from parents or students for meals. The service issued a statement to debunk circulating reports of a GH¢1,700 feeding fee, labeling them as false and misleading.
Context of the Allegations
These denials emerged following a radio broadcast that alleged the Free SHS policy was no longer entirely free, with specific schools purportedly levying charges for student meals. The broadcast sparked public concern about the sustainability and integrity of the flagship educational initiative.
GES Reaffirms Commitment to Free SHS
In its official statement, the GES emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to not only maintaining but also enhancing the Free SHS policy. The service warned that any actions designed to undermine this national program would be treated with the utmost seriousness.
