Parliament Poised to Pass Spousal Property Rights Bill Amidst Urgency

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has declared the legislative body ready to expedite the passage of the Property Rights of Spouses Bill, signaling a significant step towards ensuring fairness and accountability in the division of assets acquired during marriage. This commitment follows a petition from the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Ghana, highlighting the urgent need for such legislation.

Addressing Hardships and Legal Gaps

Speaker Bagbin acknowledged Parliament’s deep concern over the severe hardships faced by women and children, particularly after marital dissolution. He noted that Members of Parliament frequently encounter constituents struggling with basic needs like survival, housing, and child welfare due to the absence of clear legal frameworks for spousal property rights.
