North East Region Showcases Substantial Development Gains Under Government Accountability Series

North East Regional Minister, Mr. Ibrahim Tia, detailed significant advancements across key sectors in the region over the past 16 months during the maiden Government Accountability Series held in Nalerigu on Thursday, May 8, 2026. The address highlighted progress in infrastructure, health, education, agriculture, security, and economic development, aiming to foster transparency and update residents on governmental performance.

Regional Stability and Security Enhancements

The region is experiencing relative peace and stability, attributed to collaborative efforts between the government, security agencies, traditional authorities, and development partners. To bolster security operations, the Ghana Police Service received seven new vehicles, including three armoured units and four pickup trucks. Furthermore, plans are underway to establish a Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI) office in Nalerigu, strengthening the region’s intelligence-gathering capabilities.

Transforming Education and Healthcare Access

In the education sector, the government has initiated 85 infrastructure projects, encompassing classroom blocks, dormitories, and administrative facilities. The Free Senior High School (SHS) policy has been further supported through improved infrastructure and the provision of essential teaching materials. Healthcare has seen considerable investment, with 31 health facilities either constructed, rehabilitated, or completed in partnership with development agencies. All six districts within the North East Region are included in Phase One of the Mahama Care Policy, which aims to enhance healthcare delivery through the establishment of 10 new health kiosks.

Boosting Agriculture and Water Infrastructure

Recognizing agriculture as the region’s economic bedrock, significant support has been provided to farmers. Under the Feed Ghana Programme, 20,000 bags of fertilizer, hybrid maize and tomato seeds, water pumps, and livestock have been distributed. Water and sanitation initiatives include the commencement of 26 borehole projects, with 10 already completed and 16 in progress. Plans are also in motion to rehabilitate the Nalerigu and Langbinsi dams, addressing long-standing water management issues.

Infrastructure Development: Roads and Energy

Road infrastructure, a persistent concern, has seen renewed focus. The abandoned Mishio Bridge project has been revived, and progress is being made on the Gbintiri–Nakpanduri Eastern Corridor Road as part of the government’s ‘Big Push’ agenda. Numerous feeder and urban roads are also undergoing upgrades. In the energy sector, electricity supply has improved with the completion of major looping works connecting Garu to Walewale. Additionally, 2,000 streetlights, including solar-powered units, have been distributed across the region.

Economic Growth and Public Service Expansion

To stimulate local commerce, the North East Region has been allocated seven modern 24-hour economy markets, exceeding the initial target of six. The region’s public service infrastructure is also expanding with the construction of a National Investment Bank branch in Nalerigu and the operationalization of a Passport Office, improving access to essential services for residents.

Social Interventions and Employment Initiatives

Significant social interventions have been implemented, including enhancements to the school feeding program and support for over 1,600 Persons with Disabilities. The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) membership has seen a notable increase, rising from 396,606 in 2024 to 497,275 in 2025. Furthermore, 3,421 young individuals have reportedly secured employment through various modules of the Youth Employment Agency within the region.

Looking Ahead

Minister Tia reiterated the government’s commitment to efficient resource utilization and equitable development. The focus remains on sustaining these developmental gains through continued collaboration among all stakeholders. Future attention will likely be on the progress and impact of these initiated projects, particularly in areas like road rehabilitation, dam restoration, and the expansion of healthcare and educational facilities, as the region strives for continued growth and improved living standards.
