Former Energy Minister and New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has vehemently denied allegations suggesting he and other NPP Members of Parliament from the Ashanti Region conspired with Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) officials to deliberately cause power outages. The accusations, which surfaced on social media via a viral video, claimed financial inducements were offered to ECG district directors to perpetuate power disruptions in specific constituencies. Dr. Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, refuted these claims as false, malicious, and politically motivated, urging a shift towards addressing Ghana’s ongoing electricity challenges.
Context of the Power Situation
Ghana has been experiencing intermittent power supply issues, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor,’ a term derived from the local Twi language meaning ‘on and off.’ These power outages have historically impacted households and businesses, leading to economic disruptions and public frustration. The current administration has been under pressure to find sustainable solutions to ensure a stable electricity supply.
Denial and Legal Action
In a statement released on his Facebook page on Friday, May 8, Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasized that the nation’s current power sector difficulties necessitate serious attention and practical resolutions. He criticized the spread of propaganda and misinformation, arguing that politicizing the power situation detracts from genuine efforts to alleviate consumer difficulties.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh further announced that he has instructed his legal team to initiate proceedings against the media house and the presenter responsible for disseminating the allegations. He stated that they must provide concrete evidence to substantiate their claims or face legal repercussions.
