Kumasi, Ghana – May 8th: Amidst a torrential downpour that flooded Kumasi’s streets and disrupted daily life, Alice Esinam, a final-year Junior High School student, demonstrated remarkable resilience by arriving late but undeterred to pitch her business idea at the McDan Youth Connect event held at Adventist Senior High School. Despite facing significant travel challenges due to the heavy rains, Alice, a candidate for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) from KNUST Senior High School, persevered to present her proposal for her mother’s decade-old catering business.
Overcoming the Storm
The 2nd Adventist Edition of the McDan Youth Connect event, designed to foster entrepreneurial spirit among young Ghanaians, saw ten selected participants present innovative business concepts to a panel of judges. However, as the event progressed, one participant’s absence became noticeable. Unbeknownst to many in the auditorium, Alice and her mother were navigating the waterlogged roads and severe traffic congestion from their home in Boadi, a distant suburb of Kumasi.
The journey was fraught with delays, with every passing minute threatening Alice’s chance to participate. Just as the event was nearing its conclusion, the auditorium doors opened to reveal a drenched and visibly exhausted Alice and her mother. Her uniform was soaked, and her breathing heavy, a testament to the arduous journey she had undertaken.
A Powerful Presentation
Despite her disheveled appearance, Alice’s spirit remained unbroken. After a brief consultation among the organizers, she was granted a final opportunity to present. Stepping up to the microphone, Alice, a BECE candidate who had just completed her final paper earlier that day, transformed the atmosphere with her confident and passionate pitch. She spoke with a maturity and conviction that belied her age, articulating a compelling vision for expanding her mother’s established catering business.
Her presentation captivated the audience and visibly moved the judges, including entrepreneur Prophet Prakash. Alice Esinam’s extraordinary effort did not go unnoticed. She was awarded GhC 15,000 by Agribusiness entrepreneur Nii McKorley, son of Dr. Daniel McKorley, and received a year of fully sponsored public speaking coaching from renowned professional George Quaye. This recognition highlighted not only her personal strength but also the value of the opportunities provided by initiatives like McDan Youth Connect.
