A driver, Agyarko Richard, was convicted by the La Motor Court in Accra on May 8 for reckless driving captured in a viral video on the Kumasi–Accra highway. He received a fine of GH¢3,120 and a two-month jail sentence with hard labour for endangering other road users.

The incident unfolded when footage of Richard operating a Toyota Voxy (registration number EN 551-26) erratically circulated widely on social media. His dangerous maneuvers included driving on the wrong side of the road and obstructing traffic.

Following the video’s spread, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service launched an investigation. Richard was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges. These included driving on the wrong side of the road, obstructing traffic, endangering other road users, and careless and inconsiderate driving, all violations of the Road Traffic Act and Regulations.
Court’s Verdict and Sentencing
Appearing before Her Lordship Adwoa Sakyi Asumadu, Richard pleaded guilty to all charges. The court convicted him on his own plea. The sentence comprised a fine of 260 penalty units, equating to GH¢3,120, with a default penalty of 15 days’ imprisonment with hard labour. Additionally, he received a further two-month prison term, also with hard labour.
