Stakeholders in Ghana are intensifying efforts to reduce new HIV infections among young people by utilizing social media platforms for education and behavior change. This initiative is part of the Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) Project, led by Hope for Future Generations (HFFG) in collaboration with the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), targeting individuals aged 15 to 24.
Context: The AGYW Project and Vulnerable Demographics
The AGYW Project aims to equip adolescents and young women with crucial knowledge and resources for informed sexual and reproductive health decisions. This demographic, aged 15 to 24, is identified as particularly vulnerable to HIV due to increased sexual activity and exposure to various risk factors. The project, which began in 2024, has already developed a gender and human rights social media toolkit in 2025.
Repositioning Strategy: Engaging Youth Online
Recognizing the need to connect more effectively with adolescents and young women, the project is shifting its strategy to leverage the digital spaces they frequent. Ms. Rita Lodonu, Project Coordinator at HFFG, highlighted this shift at a recent media training workshop in Accra. The goal is to prevent new HIV infections by actively engaging on digital platforms.
