Single Health Worker Strains Under Weight of 5,000 Lives in Manso Aboaboso

The Manso Aboaboso Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound in Ghana’s Ashanti Region is facing a critical staffing crisis, with approximately 5,000 residents solely reliant on a single health worker. The facility, located in the Amansie South District, is struggling to meet the basic healthcare needs of its burgeoning population due to severe understaffing and a lack of essential infrastructure, particularly reliable mobile network connectivity.

A Community’s Healthcare Burden

Prince Bonzey, the lone health professional at the Manso Aboaboso CHPS Compound, is shouldering an immense workload. He is simultaneously performing duties typically handled by a full medical team, including serving as the Outpatient Department (OPD) officer, clinician, and midwife. This single individual is tasked with managing the health of an entire community of around 5,000 people.

On a typical day, Mr. Bonzey attends to over 20 patients, a demanding schedule that highlights the facility’s dire need for additional personnel. The current situation places an unsustainable burden on him and exposes the community to significant health risks.

Infrastructure Deficiencies Exacerbate Staffing Crisis

The challenges at Manso Aboaboso extend beyond a simple lack of staff. The absence of reliable mobile network connectivity is a major deterrent for healthcare professionals, leading many to refuse postings to the area. This digital isolation has profound implications for emergency medical services.

Mr. Bonzey explained to Adom News that the lack of network makes emergency healthcare delivery nearly impossible. He is unable to call for ambulance services or facilitate critical referrals, turning potentially life-saving interventions into dangerous gambles.
