GRIDCo Board Engages Staff in Historic Durbar, Pledges Renewed Focus on Operational Excellence

The Board of Directors of Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) convened its inaugural staff Durbar at its Tema head office on an unspecified recent date, fostering direct dialogue and formally recognizing employees for their critical role in restoring operations at the Akosombo Generating Station following a fire incident on April 23, 2026. The event brought together board members, management, and staff from across the company’s operational areas, signaling a commitment to transparency and enhanced institutional cohesion.

A Historic First for GRIDCo

This Durbar marked a significant milestone as the first-ever company-wide direct engagement between the GRIDCo Board and its staff. The initiative underscores the board’s dedication to open communication and strengthening bonds across all organizational levels.

Board Chairlady Kuukua Maurice Ankrah, a lawyer with 24 years of experience and the first woman to chair GRIDCo’s board, emphasized the importance of the occasion. She highlighted the board’s unwavering support for the management team.

Ankrah’s reappointment as chair brings valuable institutional continuity, having served on GRIDCo’s founding board from 2009 to 2013. Her leadership reflects a commitment to affirmative action and placing qualified women in top public sector roles.

Recognizing Resilience After Akosombo Fire

A key focus of the Durbar was to commend GRIDCo engineers and technicians for their swift and effective response to the fire incident at Akosombo. The fire damaged the switchyard control room, temporarily isolating the 1,020-megawatt Akosombo Generating Station from the national grid.

Working under challenging conditions, the GRIDCo team successfully implemented a technical bypass of the damaged infrastructure. They reconfigured protection settings and sequentially restored all six generating units.

Full restoration was achieved by May 1, 2026, with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission confirming the operational status on May 4, 2026. This rapid recovery effort was lauded as a testament to the staff’s expertise and dedication.

Leadership Voices and Collaborative Spirit

Acting Chief Executive, Engineer Frank Otchere, drew a parallel between Chairlady Ankrah and the biblical figure Deborah, a leader who guided her people to victory. He praised the staff for their resilience during the crisis.
