Accra, Ghana – May 12, 2015 – President John Mahama has authorized the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaian citizens from South Africa following a recent surge in xenophobic attacks. The decision, announced by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa via Facebook, aims to ensure the safety of Ghanaians in the affected regions.
Context of Renewed Violence
The evacuation comes as South Africa grapples with a fresh wave of xenophobic violence that has targeted foreign nationals. These attacks, which have a history of affecting various African communities, including Ghanaians, often stem from socio-economic tensions and scapegoating of migrants. The Ghanaian government had previously issued an advisory urging its citizens to register with the High Commission in Pretoria if they required assistance.
Government Response and Citizen Registration
Minister Ablakwa confirmed that the 300 individuals slated for evacuation had heeded the government’s advisory. They had proactively registered with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria, signaling their need for repatriation. This registration process allowed the government to identify and plan for the safe return of its distressed nationals.
