GNAT’s CreditMall Empowers Teachers with Tech and Mobility Solutions in Kumasi

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), through its subsidiary CreditMall Limited, has launched the Teachers Tech Access Programme (TTAP) in Kumasi. This initiative aims to equip teachers with modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) devices through accessible financing, addressing a critical need for digital tools in education and daily life.

Expanding Access to Essential Technology

The TTAP will provide teachers with laptops, tablets, and smartphones via flexible payment options. These include payroll-backed financing and “pay-later” arrangements, specifically targeting educators who cannot afford to purchase these devices outright. The program seeks to alleviate the financial strain on teachers, ensuring they have the necessary tools for their professional development and teaching responsibilities.

Dr. Kwaku Ainuson, Board Chairman of CreditMall Limited, highlighted the program’s objective during the launch. “The intervention will help teachers to access lifestyle products without additional financial burden. Our goal is that anything that a teacher needs to improve the work they do will be made available,” he stated.

Strategic Expansion and New Regional Hub

The launch coincided with the official opening of CreditMall’s new regional hub in Kumasi. This facility is positioned as a strategic expansion into the middle belt of Ghana, designed to serve as a comprehensive center for teachers seeking financial solutions and lifestyle products. The presence of the hub aims to bring services closer to educators in the Ashanti Region and surrounding areas.

Mary Ofori Mintah, Branch Head, described the new office as a significant milestone, enhancing CreditMall’s reach and ability to serve its growing customer base.

Addressing Mobility Challenges in Remote Areas

Beyond technological devices, CreditMall has also introduced a mobility intervention through the TTAP. This includes offering electric motorbikes, which are particularly beneficial for teachers working in remote and hard-to-reach communities. Transportation remains a significant hurdle for many educators in these areas.

Elvis Prince Bainey, Ashanti Regional Chairman of GNAT, emphasized the importance of this aspect of the program. “A lot of members are offering services in communities that are inaccessible by car, and you can only reach these areas on motorbikes,” he explained. He noted that over 40% of GNAT members rely on motorbikes for their daily commute, making affordable access to these vehicles a critical welfare improvement.

Commitment to Teacher Welfare

Foster Bouabeng, Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers Fund, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to enhancing teacher welfare. He noted that previously, many teachers had to bear the full cost of essential purchases themselves due to a lack of structured support. The expansion of CreditMall’s services aims to rectify this by providing structured and affordable financing schemes.

The new Kumasi hub will also facilitate other financial products, including smartphone financing, device-specific access schemes, and the “Builders Club.” The Builders Club is designed to support home construction by connecting teachers with suppliers and lenders, further extending CreditMall’s impact on teachers’ lives.

Positive Reception and Future Outlook

Teachers present at the launch expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, viewing it as a practical and timely intervention. They anticipate that the program will ease financial pressures and improve their access to the tools necessary for both effective teaching and personal well-being.

The successful launch of the Teachers Tech Access Programme and the new regional hub in Kumasi signifies a proactive approach by GNAT and CreditMall to address the evolving needs of educators. The focus on both digital literacy through tech devices and practical mobility solutions highlights a holistic strategy to improve the quality of life and professional capacity of teachers across Ghana.
