Accra, Ghana – The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, led a ministerial delegation on a support visit to the family of a young boy who was subjected to a disturbing child abuse incident in North Legon. The visit, which took place recently, aimed to assess the welfare needs of the child and his family and provide immediate support following the traumatic event.
The incident involved the child being tied to a motorbike, an act captured and shared widely, sparking public outrage and concern. The timely intervention of a Good Samaritan is credited with saving the child from further harm. This event highlighted critical issues surrounding child protection and the responsibility of caregivers in Ghana.
During the visit, Minister Lartey engaged directly with the child and his family. She conveyed the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the boy’s protection, care, and psychosocial well-being. The Minister acknowledged and expressed gratitude to the Good Samaritan and others who offered support during this distressing period.
Dr. Lartey emphasized the importance of positive and non-violent discipline methods for children. She stressed that instances of child abuse should not be considered private family matters when a child’s safety and well-being are compromised. Furthermore, a cash donation of GHS 5,000 was presented to assist with the child’s ongoing care and potential medical expenses. This financial aid is intended to cover immediate needs and contribute to the child’s recovery process.
In a move towards long-term support, Minister Lartey announced that the family would be enrolled in the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme. This government initiative aims to provide sustained financial assistance and improve the family’s overall living conditions.
The Ministry also committed to collaborating with the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, and the District Assembly. This partnership will facilitate the provision of a wheelchair for the child’s sister, addressing her mobility needs and improving her quality of life.
