Accra, Ghana – The Acting Rent Commissioner of Ghana, Fredrick Opoku, has publicly accused some landlords and hostel operators of exploiting students with exorbitant accommodation charges, alleging that the severe economic conditions are forcing some students into prostitution to afford rent. Opoku made these serious allegations during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, describing the practice as both unfair and illegal.
Context of Rising Accommodation Costs
The accusations come amidst growing concerns over the increasing cost of living and, specifically, student accommodation in Ghana. The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has been vocal about the continuous rise in hostel fees, prompting the Rent Control Department to investigate. Opoku highlighted that while hostels are registered and overseen by the Ghana Tourism Authority, the Rent Control Department holds the mandate for assessing and regulating their pricing.
