NPP Formalizes Campaign Strategy with New Messaging Committees for 2028

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is proactively establishing new structural frameworks to guide the political messaging and policy direction of its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2028 general election. This strategic move, announced by Nana Akomea, Chairman of the NPP Communications Committee, aims to transition away from what he terms “ad hoc sentiment to sentiments” politics.

Strategic Shift Towards Early Messaging Control

This initiative follows the party’s earlier decision to elect its flagbearer three years prior to the national election. Akomea acknowledged that concerns about the timing were raised, similar to when the presidential primaries were held early.

“The same sentiments came up. It’s too early. Let’s wait a while,” he recalled. However, the party leadership concluded that maximizing the available time was crucial for reorganization and refocusing after the internal contest.

“The focus that we need will be better served by having a flag bearer in place early enough,” Akomea explained during an appearance on JoyNews’ PM Express.

Mitigating Post-Primary Tensions

Early presidential primaries, according to Akomea, also serve the purpose of managing the tensions and divisions that often emerge following internal party contests. By addressing these issues well in advance, the party aims to foster a more unified front.

“It usually comes with all kinds of acrimony, so get that out of the way, and let some peace and quiet come from that,” he stated.

Establishing Coordinated Campaign Infrastructure

With Dr. Bawumia now officially the flagbearer, the NPP’s subsequent step involves constructing the necessary structures to shape and coordinate the party’s campaign message and policy platform. This ensures consistency and strategic alignment.

“Having had the flag bearer three years before the election, you need to put in place the material that will guide the campaign,” Akomea emphasized.

The objective is to ensure that the flagbearer and party spokespersons operate from established, agreed-upon policy positions, rather than reacting impulsively to developing issues.

“So that the flag bearer in terms of policy is not going to be moving from ad hoc sentiment to sentiments,” he added.

Committee Structure and Accountability

The party has organized its new committees into two primary categories. Standing committees will report directly to the NPP National Council, establishing a clear chain of command.

The Communications Committee, under Akomea’s chairmanship, will oversee the party’s communication apparatus and ensure accountability for future elected officers within this domain.

Akomea also revealed that an election for a Communications Director will take place later in the year. However, this elected director will still report through the Communications Committee to the National Council.

“The National Council, for example, will not call the communications director directly. They will call the chairman of the communications committee,” he clarified, underscoring the committee’s supervisory role.

Implications for Future Campaigns

This structured approach signals a significant departure from traditional, often reactive, campaign strategies. By building a robust messaging framework and ensuring clear lines of accountability, the NPP appears determined to present a more cohesive and policy-driven campaign in 2028.

The early establishment of these committees suggests a long-term vision for message discipline and strategic planning. Readers and political observers will be watching to see how effectively these new structures can translate into a compelling and consistent campaign narrative for Dr. Bawumia and the NPP, and whether this model will be adopted by other political parties.
