Minority Leader Warns New Value for Money Office Risks Legitimizing Procurement Corruption

Accra, Ghana – On Wednesday, May 13th, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin issued a strong warning that Ghana’s newly enacted Value for Money Office Act, 2026, could inadvertently legitimize corruption within the nation’s public procurement processes instead of curbing it. He expressed these concerns via a Facebook statement, asserting that the government has established an institution lacking crucial safeguards for independent operation.

Concerns Over Independence and Reporting Structure

A key point of contention for Mr. Afenyo-Markin is the office’s reporting structure. Placing the Value for Money Office under the direct supervision of the Minister of Finance, he argues, fundamentally undermines its credibility and effectiveness.
