Accra, Ghana – The recent death of 29-year-old engineer Charles Amissah, attributed to medical neglect after being denied care by three major hospitals, highlights a persistent cycle of systemic failure and individual blame in Ghana’s healthcare system, according to neurosurgeon Dr. Hadi Mohammed Abdallah. Speaking on Wednesday, Dr. Abdallah expressed sorrow but little surprise, citing a national tendency to react emotionally to tragedies by finding scapegoats rather than implementing lasting reforms.
A Culture of Scapegoats
Dr. Abdallah described Ghana’s response to national crises as a pattern of emotional outcry followed by the identification of an individual to blame. This approach, he argues, prevents the necessary deep-seated institutional changes needed to prevent future occurrences.
