The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully contained a devastating commercial fire in Kumasi’s Suame Magazine Zone 18 early Saturday morning, May 16, 2026. The blaze, which tragically claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman and destroyed numerous properties, including structures, vehicles, and engines, required a swift and coordinated response from emergency services.
Fire Erupts in Busy Commercial Hub
The fire originated near the bustling garage area of Suame Magazine, a major hub for auto parts and repairs in Kumasi. The Breman Fire Station received the initial distress call at approximately 3:22 a.m. Emergency crews were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival at 3:34 a.m., a combined team from the Breman and Komfo Anokye Fire Stations, under the command of Station Officer I Ampaabeng, encountered a well-developed inferno. Flames had already engulfed several structures, vehicles, and valuable spare parts.
Extensive Damage Assessed
According to official reports from the GNFS, the fire’s impact was significant. It affected three wooden structures, three metal containers, four vehicles, and nine DAF vehicle engines. The rapid spread of the fire underscored the combustible nature of materials typically found in such commercial environments.
Firefighters employed a dual strategy of offensive and defensive tactics to combat the blaze. Their efforts proved effective, bringing the fire under control by 3:59 a.m. and fully extinguishing it by 4:51 a.m., utilizing water and foam suppression agents.
Tragic Loss of Life and Property Salvaged
Amidst the destruction, a somber discovery was made. A 70-year-old woman, identified as Madam Bawama Naya, was found deceased, having been trapped within the burning structures. Her body was subsequently handed over to the Suame District Police Command for further preservation and investigation into the circumstances of her death.
Despite the extensive damage, the quick response from the fire service allowed for the salvage of several valuable assets. Firefighters managed to rescue three Sprinter buses, one Smiling Benz bus, and one Opanka bus from the path of the fire.
