Germany-Based Ghanaian Musician Ras Opoku Announces 'Smile Festival' for Ghana

Germany-based Ghanaian reggae musician Ras Opoku is set to launch the “Smile Festival” in Ghana later this year. The event aims to foster a closer connection with his audience in his home country and promote a message of hope and resilience through music.

Bridging Continents Through Music

Ras Opoku, who has cultivated a significant following across Europe, plans to bring his music and positive message back to Ghana. His European career spans over three decades, with performances in Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands. He has established a unique musical style by blending reggae with influences from Highlife, Afrobeat, jazz, rock, and traditional Ghanaian rhythms.

The inspiration for the festival stems from his latest song, “Smile,” featured on his album “Jah Will Be There.” Recorded in Germany with his band D’Jah-Nerations, the song encapsulates themes of perseverance and optimism in the face of adversity.

“The main message in the ‘Smile’ song is that though times may be hard, we can still press on to achieve our intended goals,” Ras Opoku explained. “We can weather any kind of storm with smiles on our faces and determination in our hearts.”

A Platform for Positivity and Cultural Exchange

The “Smile Festival” is envisioned as more than just a music event; it’s a platform designed to spread positivity and encourage cultural exchange. Ras Opoku, often called “The African Teacher” for his dedication to discussing African history and culture during his performances, hopes the festival will eventually gain international recognition.

He aims to use the festival to promote a more accurate and nuanced representation of Africa through its vibrant music and diverse cultures. This initiative aligns with his long-standing commitment to educating audiences about the richness of the continent.

Ghanaian Talent to Feature

Discussions are underway with prominent Ghanaian artists to join Ras Opoku at the festival, which is planned to take place in Accra. Among the artists he hopes to collaborate with are Highlife legends Queen Asabia and her brother, the internationally acclaimed Rocky Dawuni, and the distinct Odo Reggae performer Bongofari.

“They are performers who have distinguished themselves in their own special ways,” Ras Opoku stated. “Queen Asabia and her brother are Highlife greats. Rocky is a highly-priced international item, and Bongofari has won fans with his Odo Reggae style. It would be wonderful to team up with them to spread positive messages to our people.”

Musical Roots and Evolution

Originally from Offinso in the Ashanti Region, Ras Opoku’s journey to the European music scene began over 30 years ago when he relocated to Germany. His music, featured on his latest 10-track album “Jah Will Be There,” is performed in English, Twi, and Pidgin English, reflecting his diverse influences and audience reach.

The album itself, recorded in Germany, showcases his band D’Jah-Nerations and highlights his ability to fuse traditional sounds with contemporary global genres. Live performances from this album are expected to be a central part of the “Smile Festival” program.

Future Outlook

The “Smile Festival” marks a significant step for Ras Opoku in reconnecting with his Ghanaian roots and sharing his evolved musical message. As the planning progresses, the music industry and audiences in Ghana will be watching to see how this initiative unfolds. The festival could potentially pave the way for increased cultural exchange and provide a new platform for artists committed to spreading messages of hope and unity.
