Two teenage individuals are dead from apparent self-inflicted wounds after fatally shooting three men at the Islamic Centre of San Diego on Monday morning, an act authorities are investigating as a hate crime. Police responded to the shooting at approximately 11:43 AM local time, discovering the victims outside the mosque. The attackers, aged 17 and 18, were found deceased in a vehicle a few blocks away, following a separate incident where they allegedly fired shots at a landscaper.
Context of the Attack
The incident unfolded as police were already investigating a separate call concerning a potentially suicidal teenager who had left home with several firearms and a vehicle. The mother of one of the suspects had contacted authorities hours earlier, reporting her son, accompanied by a friend and both dressed in camouflage, had departed with her guns and car. Police noted the suspect’s behavior was not consistent with suicidal indicators at that time, though a note later found contained “generalized hate rhetoric and hate speech,” according to San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl.
The Islamic Centre of San Diego, the largest mosque in the county, was targeted during a time of heightened religious observance, just days before the important Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. The Al Rashid School, which offers religious and language courses, is also located on the mosque’s campus, meaning children were present during the unfolding events.
Details of the Incident
Upon arrival at the mosque, officers discovered three deceased victims with gunshot wounds. Chief Wahl emphasized that no officers discharged their weapons during the initial response. Simultaneously, reports emerged of shots fired from a vehicle in the vicinity. Police located the suspects, who had apparently shot themselves, in a car a short distance from the mosque. They also learned the suspects had fired at a landscaper, who fortunately remained unharmed, though a bullet may have ricocheted off his hard hat.
One of the victims has been identified by acquaintances as a security guard at the mosque. Officials lauded his actions, stating he “played a pivotal role” in preventing the attack from becoming more severe and undoubtedly saved lives. This individual was reportedly a father of eight.
Investigating the Motive
While the exact motive remains under investigation, authorities are treating the shooting as a hate crime due to the targeting of a place of worship and the nature of writings attributed to one of the suspects. The note left by the youth contained hate speech but did not include specific threats against the mosque or any individuals. The FBI has appealed to the public for any information that could assist their investigation.
Witnesses described hearing a significant number of shots, estimated by one resident to be up to 30, fired from what sounded like a semi-automatic weapon. Police arrived on the scene within minutes of the initial 911 calls.
Community and Official Reactions
Imam Taha Hassane, director of the Islamic Centre of San Diego, expressed outrage, stating, “It is extremely outrageous to target a place of worship. The facility ‘is a house of worship, not a battlefield.'” Governor Gavin Newsom of California released a statement condemning the “violent attack” and affirming that the state “will not tolerate acts of terror or intimidation against communities of faith.” President Donald Trump described the situation as “terrible” and indicated a strong review of the events.
Implications and Future Outlook
This tragic event underscores the persistent threat of hate-motivated violence against religious institutions and minority communities. The San Diego incident highlights the critical need for vigilance and robust security measures at places of worship. As the Muslim community prepares for Eid al-Adha, the attack serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerability faced by congregants. Law enforcement and community leaders will likely focus on enhanced interfaith dialogue, anti-hate initiatives, and reinforced security protocols to prevent future occurrences. The FBI’s ongoing investigation will be crucial in understanding the full scope of the perpetrators’ motives and any potential networks involved.
