GSA Shuts Down 5A Homes Over Substandard Mattresses

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has shut down 5A Homes, a Chinese-owned mattress manufacturing facility in Dawhenya, Greater Accra Region, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. The closure is part of an intensified campaign against low-grade consumer goods, with the factory accused of using substandard raw materials to produce mattresses that fail to meet national quality standards.

National Campaign Against Inferior Products

This enforcement action is the second in as many days by the GSA, highlighting a determined effort to eliminate substandard products from the Ghanaian market. The operation at 5A Homes followed discreet intelligence gathering by GSA enforcement officers.

Upon inspection, the team discovered that the manufacturing facility was allegedly utilizing inferior raw materials. These materials resulted in the production of household mattresses that significantly fell below the mandated national quality benchmarks.

Factory Operations Halted

GSA enforcement officers immediately ceased all production activities at the 5A Homes premises. The workforce was evacuated, and the entire facility was placed under state lock and key. This decisive action aims to prevent further distribution of potentially unsafe and low-quality bedding products.

GSA’s Commitment to Consumer Safety

Mr. Clement Kubati, the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the Ghana Standards Authority, briefed the press following the operation. He emphasized that the ongoing exercise is a strategic move to trace and remove all substandard products circulating in the market.

“These are mattresses that have been manufactured. It’s not a month or two. This is just recent manufacturing. These are substandard mattresses that are being manufactured with low-standard material,” Mr. Kubati stated. He expressed concern that some of these unapproved products had already found their way into the retail market.

The GSA plans to extend its dragnet beyond manufacturing hubs to trading centers across the country. This indicates a comprehensive approach to tackling the issue of substandard goods.

Previous Operations and Future Outlook

The closure of 5A Homes follows a similar operation on Monday, May 18, 2026. On that day, the GSA shut down several other mattress manufacturing companies in Afienya, near Tema, for also using unapproved chemical formulations and substandard materials.

The GSA has announced that these operations will continue indefinitely. The authority issued a stern warning to all manufacturers of household items, urging strict adherence to national quality specification codes.

Manufacturers who fail to comply face immediate closure, asset sealing, and potential prosecution. The GSA’s aggressive stance underscores its commitment to protecting consumers from the health and environmental impacts associated with inferior products.

The implications for the industry are significant, signaling increased regulatory scrutiny and a potential shift towards higher quality standards. Consumers can expect a safer market as the GSA continues its enforcement drive, with further raids and market surveillance anticipated in the coming weeks and months.
