The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a suspected armed robbery gang operating in the Upper East Region, leaving two suspects dead and four others in custody following an intelligence-led operation on April 29, 2026. The operation targeted the gang’s hideout in Zuarungu, leading to the arrest of four individuals and the recovery of significant weaponry and stolen goods.
Context of the Operation
For months, residents and businesses in the Upper East Region have faced a growing threat from a series of violent robberies. These incidents, often involving firearms, have targeted vehicles and commercial establishments, causing fear and disrupting economic activities.
The police’s operation was a direct response to this escalating criminal activity. The intelligence gathered pointed to a specific gang responsible for multiple attacks along key routes and at mining sites.
Details of the Bust
The raid on the Zuarungu hideout proved fruitful. Police apprehended Awudu Kasim, Malik Baako, Mohammed Amidu, and Wadud Abdul.
During the search of the premises, officers discovered a G3 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. This weapon was found concealed within the compartment of a motorbike.
Investigators believe this motorbike was stolen by one of the deceased suspects, Samsudeen Mohammed, with the assistance of an accomplice identified only as “DJ,” who remains at large.
In addition to the firearm and the suspected stolen motorbike, the police also recovered seven other motorbikes. These are believed to have been acquired through the gang’s criminal enterprises across the region.
Confessions and Previous Crimes
Preliminary investigations and interrogations have revealed the suspects’ alleged involvement in a pattern of violent crimes.
The arrested individuals reportedly confessed to orchestrating an attack on a bus traveling the Zuarungu–Kongo road on February 4, 2026. During this robbery, the bus driver, Ussif Abdul Razak, sustained severe gunshot injuries, losing three fingers.
The same group is also linked to a separate robbery incident involving a cargo truck driver on the same Zuarungu–Kongo route.
Further confessions indicate the gang’s involvement in a brazen robbery at a mining site in Gbane on March 28, 2026. A miner was reportedly attacked and robbed of cash and gold during this incident.
Fatal Confrontation
The police operation unfortunately resulted in casualties. Two suspects, Samsudeen Mohammed and Seidu Safianu, sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation with law enforcement.
They were pronounced dead shortly after and their bodies have been transferred to the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and subsequent autopsy.
Ongoing Investigation and Fugitive Hunt
The four individuals currently in custody are cooperating with investigators and providing crucial information.
The Ghana Police Service has intensified efforts to apprehend other members of the gang, including the fugitive known as “DJ.”
Commitment to Security
The successful operation underscores the Police Service’s dedication to combating criminal networks within the Upper East Region and across the country.
Authorities have assured the public that they will continue to pursue all perpetrators of violent crime and bring them to justice, aiming to restore safety and security for all residents.
Looking Ahead
The apprehension of this gang is a significant step in improving security in the Upper East Region. The public will be watching to see if this success leads to a sustained reduction in armed robberies. The police’s focus will now shift to bringing the arrested individuals to trial and capturing the remaining fugitive, “DJ.” Further operations may target other suspected criminal elements, and the effectiveness of intelligence gathering and community cooperation will be key in preventing future incidents.
